Frisian in education

Growing up multilingual is an important element in the (language) development of children, and the municipality is keen to encourage and facilitate this.

Preschool education

We strive to ensure that all playgroups and childcare centers in our municipality are bilingual certified in the future.

SFBO (Subsidies for extracurricular care)

The 'Sintrum Frysktalige Berne-Opfang' (SFBO) helps childcare centers in the municipality to create a language-rich environment for children. They consistently apply the one-person-one-language approach. Parents are naturally involved in this process. The SFBO provides information and holds parent evenings about multilingualism and the importance of language policy and language provision. On SFBO.nl you will find an overview of the bilingual playgroups and daycare centers in the municipality.

Tomke project

Our municipality provides subsidies for the It Tomke project. This project aims to inform parents and leaders of toddlers about the use of language in interactions with young children. An important task for the Tomke project is to develop and offer Frisian-language material that can be used in a multilingual preschool environment. The project's material consists of a reading map, books to take home, posters, information leaflets about the TV broadcasts, and information meetings for the toddler leaders. For more information, see Tomke.nl.

Primary education

The municipality encourages primary schools to give language and language policy a clear place in their school plans. We also encourage primary schools to start a trajectory to become a trilingual school. Here you will find the overview of the trilingual primary schools in the municipality.

Secondary education

The municipality encourages schools for secondary education to include a paragraph on language policy in their school plans, so that it becomes clear what place Frisian and multilingualism has and may have in the school.

Education for adults

The Afûk organizes Frisian courses every year, such as the courses 'Lear mar Frysk' (Learn Frisian), 'Praat mar Frysk' (Speak Frisian) and 'Skriuw mar Frysk' (Write Frisian). The municipality subsidizes these courses. Workshops are also organized for the editorial staff of the various village newspapers and village websites. See the Afûk website for more information.
