Environment: permit or notification

If your company's activities have an impact on the environment, you must apply for an environmental permit, inform about it, or file a notification Decree on Environmental Activities.

Check whether an environmental permit is required

With the Permit Check in the Environment Desk, you check whether you need to apply for a permit or whether making a notification or providing information is sufficient.

Do the Permit Check

Permit application

Go through the following steps to apply for an environmental permit for your work:

  • first consult with the municipality about your plans. This can be done through the Explore your project idea page;
  • Apply for an environmental permit in the Environment Counter;
  • You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your application;
  • for a complex application, the municipality first makes a draft decision on your application;
  • If you do not agree with this draft decision, you can give your opinion (viewpoint) to the municipality within 6 weeks. Please indicate why you do not agree with the draft decision;
  • you will receive notification from the municipality whether you will receive the permit.

Duty to notify or inform

If the Permit Check in the Environment Desk shows that reporting or providing information about your activity is sufficient, the following applies:

  • make the notification or disclosure at least 4 weeks before you start your activities;
  • the municipality will send you an acknowledgement of receipt of your report or your information.

Environmental Rules

Via Maatregelen op Maat in the Omgevingsloket you can see which rules from the Decree on Activities in the Living Environment apply to you and what you must do to follow these rules. You must always comply with these rules. Even if you do not need a permit or notification. You get an overview of, for example, which measures you must take, how often and in what order. You can use the overview as a checklist.

When will you be notified by the municipality?

  • For an ordinary application: after 8 weeks, you will receive notification of whether you will receive the permit (can be extended by 6 weeks). Do you disagree with the decision of the municipality? Then you can object within 6 weeks.
  • For a complex application: within 26 weeks you will receive notification of whether you will receive the permit (can be extended by 6 weeks). Do you disagree with the decision of the municipality? Then you can appeal to the court within 6 weeks. This is only possible if you have also submitted an opinion on the draft decision.
