Crisis Management

Do not be surprised

Do you know what to do when the power goes out? Or when it's extremely hot or cold? Or if you are dealing with a confused person? Don't be taken by surprise! Here you will find information on what to do during an emergency or disaster. So you are well prepared and can help yourself and those around you during various emergencies and calamities.

What can you do in the event of a crisis?

The chance of a major disaster or crisis in our municipality is fortunately small. But if there is immediate danger, it is important that you know what to do. By being well prepared, you can help yourself and others. Together, we can keep our community safe and resilient.

Preparing for a crisis

In a major emergency, help can sometimes take a while to arrive. You can prepare for this now. Consider, for example, prolonged outages of electricity, drinking water or internet.

Want to know what risks exist in our municipality? Then look at the Risicokaart | Gives insight into safety. There you can see, for example, companies with hazardous materials and LPG filling stations.

You can prepare by:

  • Have an emergency kit in your home. Many items you probably already have, such as a flashlight, battery-powered radio, food and drink. With an emergency kit, you will be better prepared for the first 72 hours.
  • Set up NL Alert on your cell phone. This way you will receive an instant alert if something is going on in your neighborhood.
  • Make arrangements with people around you. Discuss how you can help each other and who to turn to in case of an emergency.
  • More tips can be found on the Think Ahead website .

Warning in the event of a disaster

You will be alerted by the siren and via NL-Alert on your cell phone (if set up). Do you hear the siren or receive an NL-Alert? Stay as calm as possible, go inside, close doors and windows and turn on radio or TV on the regional station for information.

The sirens are tested every first Monday of the month at noon.

What should you do in the event of a siren?

Get inside the nearest building as soon as possible. Close doors and windows and turn off ventilation. Let people who ring your doorbell take shelter inside. Warn others who did not hear the siren.

Listen to disaster broadcaster for instructions. In case of a disaster in your area, this is the regional broadcaster on radio and TV, Omrop Fryslân. In case of a national disaster, this is Nederland 1 or Radio 1. Also check Fryslân Veilig for up-to-date information.

What not to do when the siren goes off?

Do not call 112 or the local police, fire department or ambulance unless there is an immediate emergency for yourself. Telephone exchanges must remain free for emergency assistance.

Please do not take your children out of school. The school administration will catch them and make sure they are safe.

If you need to leave your home (evacuation)

Shut off gas, water and electricity. Take only the most important items with you. Lock your home securely and let neighbors know there is an evacuation.

In case of fire, call 911: stay low to the ground to avoid smoke. Can't get away? Stand near a window so the fire department can see you. Follow the route indicated by the police or emergency services.

If possible, take others with you who do not have transportation. Listen to traffic information on the radio on the way. Go to the shelter or to family or friends outside the disaster area.

There is special transportation for the needy, the elderly and schoolchildren during a disaster or crisis. The institutions where these people are at the time provide this.

Staying informed

In the event of a crisis, we use multiple channels to inform you:
