JOGG - Healthy youth, healthy future

The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel believes it is important that children and young people grow up in a society where healthy living is the most normal thing in the world. We would like them to be able to live, learn, recreate and work in a healthy environment in which structural attention is paid to a healthy lifestyle. That is why we have been working with the JOGG approach since 2016. This stands for healthy youth, healthy future.

Together, we make healthy living the norm!

JOGG approach

JOGG believes in the power of a healthy environment. That is why JOGG focuses not only on the child itself, but especially on the environment of children. What is the norm at home when it comes to eating vegetables? What do children take to school in their lunchbox? Do they get enough exercise and what do they see in the media? Is there also something healthy on the menu of the sports canteen? And do they cycle to school safely? By making the social and physical environment of children healthy(ier), health becomes the most normal thing in the world for them and they can make a healthy choice more easily.

Together with professionals from youth health care, the GGD (municipal health service), community sports coaches, social work, the area team and education, we are making the environment for children healthier. Parties such as local interest groups, the food bank, sports clubs, local supermarkets, the greengrocer and the business community are also indispensable for a successful approach.

The videos below show what JOGG does to encourage young people to exercise.

JOGG projects

Below are a number of JOGG projects in the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel.

Drinking water campaign

Encouraging water consumption is high on JOGG's agenda. We are currently working on encouraging water consumption in primary schools.

With the 'Drink Water School' project, JOGG encourages children to drink more water instead of sugary drinks. Children often find sweetened drinks tempting, but it turns out that many children also enjoy water. The goal is to make drinking water fun for children. The children learn in a playful way that drinking water is cheap, healthy, easy, and tasty.

Vegetable projects

The child health center works with "Vegetable snacks in ten steps". Parents receive a fun package with useful tips and tools to get their child used to the taste of vegetables from the first snacks. We will soon be setting up a vegetable box project at the daycare centers that will tie in with this. Children are encouraged to taste different types of vegetables. After tasting five times, they receive a beautiful card to take home with a recipe on the back to try out at home. At the end, children receive a vegetable box, in which they can take their fresh vegetable snack with them every day.

Towards a healthier weight for children

'Healthy Weight for Children' is an approach for children with overweight or obesity and their families. Together, we work towards children feeling better and adopting a healthier lifestyle. We look at the child's personal situation. It's about more than just weight. It is an approach where participants decide which goals are important to them. We do this together with one permanent contact person, the central healthcare provider. The central healthcare provider discusses with the family what is happening in the home situation and what influences the lifestyle. We look at what works best in the family situation and what best suits the child and his or her family members.

Results of the JOGG approach 2024

Growing up healthy

JOGG municipalities Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel have been committed to a healthy youth and a healthy future since 2016. It is important that children can grow up healthy. This makes them feel better, perform better at school, find a job faster and participate in society more easily.

Ordinary

The JOGG approach focuses on all children and young people up to the age of 23 and their parents/carers. In these municipalities, the focus is on 4-12 year olds. We are working on a healthy living environment in which it is easier for everyone to choose healthy options. Points of attention are:

  • drinking water;
  • healthy food;
  • sufficient exercise.

JOGG connects local parties and great initiatives. Together we make healthy the norm.

Healthy Weight for Children

Part of JOGG is Child to Healthy Weight, aimed at children aged 4 to 18 with overweight/obesity. If children are not feeling well and want a healthier lifestyle, they can get help. Central healthcare providers are already working in both municipalities to support families with this.

This is a package that makes it easy for them to start with healthy food for their baby. For 2023/2024, a total of 500 packages are available for parents of newborn babies.

Growing up healthy with High Five

Fruit, vegetables, and drinking water are always provided at (sports) events for children, courtesy of High Five Sportstimulering. Examples of events organized in 2024 include:

The food bank in Surhuisterveen aims to become the healthiest food bank in Friesland. In 2024, the food packages were reviewed and it turned out that 58% comes from the Wheel of Five (nutrition guidelines). The goal is 75%, and JOGG (Healthy Youth, Healthy Future) helps with advice and information about healthy food.

Fit@school

Primary schools 't Partoer in Burgum and De Oanrin in Twijzel participated in the fit@school challenge. For six weeks, these schools hosted activities, workshops, and guest lectures to make students more aware of a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy schools

In 2024, 17 schools (13 primary and 4 secondary schools) in Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel have been working on the Healthy School approach. These schools are working to make a healthy lifestyle a natural part of the school environment.

Water Fountains

A plan has been made to realize two new water taps at the De Kûpe swimming pool/De Houtmoune sports hall in Buitenpost and in the center of Surhuisterveen. Both are expected to be officially opened in 2025.

Vegetable boxes

In the spring of 2024, children at daycare centers in both municipalities were offered vegetables every day during the Vegetable Box program. In total, 1000 children participated, divided over 40 care groups (from 5 different organizations).
