In early 2022, Gerrit moved into his new, partially insulated corner house. He then immediately had solar panels installed. Now he is working on the next step to make his home even more comfortable and energy efficient.

Make an appointment with an energy coach

"When I bought the house, the roof was insulated from the inside with PIR boards and all the windows had double-glazing," Gerrit says. "Even the extension that the previous residents put on the back was fully insulated. I myself installed draft strips where necessary."

Energy consultant appointment

Soon Gerrit will have an appointment with an energy consultant from the municipality's energy desk for advice on further possible insulation measures and subsidies. His first priority is insulation of the wooden floor in the front part of the house. "In winter, a lot of cold radiates from there. Warmer feet in the winter would be nice."

Sheets, PUR or foil

Gerrit has already looked into various possibilities and is curious about the energy consultant's advice as well as the possibilities for subsidies. "I'm thinking of insulating the floor from below. The only thing I don't know yet is whether to do it with boards, PUR or foil. I could also have pearls or chips injected into the crawl space, but that seems inconvenient if something ever needs to be done in the crawl space."

Worth the effort?

He also wonders if cavity wall insulation is worthwhile in his case. "There is a garage on the side that insulates the living room. Otherwise, the front and side walls consist mostly of windows. In total, it is still only about 3m 2 of cavity wall. So maybe insulation doesn't make much sense if I don't also replace all the glass for HR++ glass. Quick wins

In the future, Gerrit may want to replace the wooden floor with a concrete floor with underfloor heating and the possibility of connecting a heat pump to it. "In terms of costs, that's really something for the longer term. I'll just start by insulating the current wooden floor and maybe the cavity walls; quick wins with relatively low costs and many benefits in terms of energy savings and comfort.
