Ground source energy system: permit or notification
With geothermal energy, buildings, homes and factories can be heated and cooled in a sustainable way. By using this energy, you help save fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions.
There are 2 systems for using this energy in the soil:
- In an open geothermal energy system, you use groundwater for cooling or heating. Groundwater is cooler than the environment in the summer and warmer in the winter.
- in a closed geothermal energy system (ground heat exchanger), water flows in pipes through the ground, without direct contact with the groundwater.
More information can be found on the website of the Information Point Living Environment (IPLO).
Check whether an environmental permit is required
Use the Permit Check in the Environmental Portal to check whether you need to apply for a permit or whether submitting a notification or providing information is sufficient.
Make a report
If the Permit Check shows that you only need to submit a notification, you can do this via the Environmental Portal. Submit the notification at least 4 weeks before you start your activities.
Apply for an environmental permit
If the Permit Check shows that you need an environmental permit, you can apply for this permit via the Environmental Portal. Apply for the permit at least 8 weeks before you start your activities.
