You have a green container or a black container with a green lid at home, a bio-bin. This is intended for vegetable, fruit, and plant-based garden waste.

This organic material is composted so that it can be reused as a soil improver. Therefore, ensure that only organic waste ends up in the green waste container.

Only organic waste belongs in the organic waste bin!

Do not use any (biodegradable) bags in the organic waste container.

  • The use of biodegradable bags is not permitted within the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel.
  • Biodegradable and plastic bags are not organic waste and do not belong in the organic waste container.
  • Biodegradable and plastic bags are residual waste and belong in the 'sortibak' (grey container).

The processing time in the industrial composting plant is not long enough to properly break down compostable plastics within that time. Therefore, unfortunately, pieces (resembling) plastic still remain in the compost and must still be incinerated. That is a waste and bad for the environment, but also a shame about the energy you put into separating your waste.

You can read the legal basis in Articles 7 and 8 of the Waste Ordinance and Article 4 of the Implementing Decision on the Waste Ordinance, via overheid.nl:

What goes in the green waste container?

Below you can quickly see what types of waste these are:

  • Vegetable, fruit and garden waste
  • Food scraps
  • leaves

You can take different types of waste that do not belong in the organic waste bin to the composting site in Sumar. For example:

  • leaves
  • tree stumps, costing € 25,- to € 35,- each
  • soil, sod, earth
  • Pruning wood (bring it yourself)
  • Pruning wood (collection), costs € 19.25 (maximum 2 m3), each additional m3 costs € 8,-
  • Black soil, maximum 1 m3

When is the organic waste container emptied?

Has your organic waste bin not been completely emptied?

Due to frost, for example, material may stick to the bottom of the container. Our advice is to first put a newspaper at the bottom of the container. A small piece of wood between the lid prevents the container from sticking shut.
