Cycling season kicks off with a tour around Burgum

This morning, about 78 seniors hopped on their bikes at Bourguignon Bikes and Scooters in Burgum. Sports Councilor Doeke Fokkema kicked off a beautiful 30-kilometer tour through Tytsjerksteradiel. This tour marks the start of the new Doortrappen season: a program that encourages seniors to continue cycling safely and confidently until they turn 100.

Fokkema explains: "Thanks to Doortrappen’s activities, older adults can continue to ride their bikes safely and with confidence for longer. This gives them freedom, enjoyment, and a sense of connection with others."

Interesting stops along the way

Along the way, there were several stops offering interesting glimpses into local life. The cyclists took the Schalkediep ferry to cross from Suwâld to Garyp. At Brasserie Om de Dobben, participants were treated to a cup of coffee or tea. There, Aleida Muis from the Fietsersbond spoke about cycling safety and the tools available to help ensure it. Finally, the route led past the Observeum, where volunteers gave a tour of the observatory. Afterward, attendees received a booklet containing all the cycling routes in Friesland.

Keep pedaling in Friesland

The "Doortrappen" season kicked off today simultaneously in all municipalities across Friesland. Until October 31, there will be a variety of cycling activities for seniors. These include the distribution of bicycle mirrors and test days for seniors who want to try out a tricycle. All activities and "Doortrappen" routes in Friesland can be found on the website www.doortrappen.frl

"Keep Pedaling" is a collaboration between the municipality, the Regional Road Safety Authority of Fryslân (ROF), the Dutch Cyclists' Union, VeiligheidNL, and SportFryslân.
