Extra help with voting

Anyone who wants to vote should be able to do so, even if they need assistance. There are various tools available to make voting easier. On this page, you can read about what these are and where you can find them in our municipality.

Accessible polling stations

To ensure that you can vote as independently as possible, a number of measures have been put in place at all polling stations.

  • The polling stations are accessible to people with walkers, mobility scooters, or standard-sized wheelchairs.
  • Each polling station has one voting booth with a low writing desk for voters in wheelchairs.
  • Polling station staff (polling station officials) are available to provide assistance and guidance.
  • A magnifying glass and an enlarged list of candidates are available.

Extra accessible polling station in the town hall

The extra accessible polling station is located at the town hall in Burgum. It has all the same facilities as a normal polling station. In addition, there are other facilities:

  • A voting machine with a voting box/sound box;
  • extra spacious design so that you can easily access it with a wheelchair or mobility scooter;
  • disabled parking spaces;
  • a disabled toilet.

How a voting machine with a voting box/sound box works

The voting template is a special plate with holes that is placed over the ballot paper by a polling station official. The voting box/soundbox with headphones tells you which parties and candidates are on the list and which number corresponds to them. The template shows the parties with tactile numbers and in Braille. You can find the right candidate by counting the holes and then color in the hole with a pencil. More help with voting

Help in the voting booth

Sometimes voting can be difficult due to a physical disability. For example, are you unable to hold a pencil or can you see (almost) nothing? In that case, someone is allowed to help you in the voting booth. This can be someone you bring with you, or a member of staff at the polling station.

In all other cases, no one else is allowed to accompany you into the voting booth. This also applies to people with dementia or a (mild) intellectual disability. You are allowed to ask for help outside the voting booth.

Voting at a quiet moment

At certain times, polling stations can be very busy. If you are easily bothered by crowds and noise, it may be preferable to cast your vote at a quieter time. The polling stations listed below are often quiet between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.:

  • Burgum, Berchhiem
  • Jistrum, MFA De Trochset
  • Earnewâld, Village Hall
  • Suwâld, The Suderfinne
  • Hurdegaryp, Bennemastate
  • Ryptsjerk, The Einekoer
  • Wyns, The School

The addresses of the polling stations can be found on the Polling stations in the municipality page.

Transportation to polling stations

Would you like to vote yourself on election day, but don't have anyone to help you get to the polling station? Then you can use ANWB AutoMaatje and BurgumMobyl. The Wmo transport page has more information about the costs and how to book a ride.

Please note: you can reserve a ride with ANWB Automaatje until March 11.
