Frisian language policy

It gives confidence to be able to express oneself in one's native language; moreover, language also creates connection between people.

We are very aware of our role as an example and show our residents that both Frisian and Dutch can be spoken and written in our municipality. Where possible, we try to increase the visibility of Frisian and broaden its support base.

The general objective of our Frisian language policy is: 'Creating framework conditions for the preservation and strengthening of the Frisian language.' The starting point is that the residents of our municipality can use their own language to ask their questions and express their wishes. Free language choice and respect for this choice is our starting point.

You can find more about our Frisian language policy in the Frisian language policy memorandum. The Frisian Language Regulation describes how the municipality handles Frisian in written and spoken communication.
