Area expansion Burgum West

Municipal council approves Burgum-West plans

On April 16, 2025, the municipal council adopted the Mienskipskaart (Community Map) as a vision for the development of the Burgum-West area. The plans were drawn up in collaboration with the community according to the New Route (see below). The initiatives on the Mienskipskaart meet the frameworks established in advance by the municipal council. This completes the vision-forming phase for the area.

The plan includes a hotel with, among other things, a planetarium and location for an open-air play, a dog sports association, a food garden, ecological agriculture, and a green Sluiterspoel.

The municipality will now further develop the vision and prepare it for the environmental plan together with the working groups. The working groups will remain in charge of developing their own initiatives.

Via a new route to an area vision for Burgum-West

In the spring of 2021, the municipal council commissioned the development of a broadly supported vision for Burgum-West, with everyone who has an interest in the area. Residents, the citizens' initiative, nature organizations, entrepreneurs, and landowners formed the so-called co-creation team. Under the guidance of an agency, they worked hard on various scenarios. This led to a preferred scenario for the area, but not yet to the broadly supported area vision. The co-creation team was also not entirely satisfied with the process. So, a follow-up step. This became a joint decision-making process according to The New Route. Everyone who feels involved in the Burgum-West area is welcome to think and talk.

The New Route?

The next step was joint decision-making according to The New Route. Where everyone who feels involved in the Burgum-West area can contribute ideas, discuss and jointly decide on what De Warren will look like. You might think that this is just 'participation'. That's right! With The New Route, we go one step further. The municipal council determines the frameworks in advance; the conditions that the vision must meet. This cannot be changed afterwards. And that makes it exciting.

How did we do that for Burgum-West?

In 3 steps.

  1. We have invited everyone who feels involved in the Burgum-West area to participate, including people who may disagree.
  2. Neutral and impartial process supervisors prepared everyone in advance who participated in the day on which a plan was jointly created.
  3. A decision is made jointly by everyone involved. This vision is presented to the municipal council, which can no longer make any changes to it.
