Handicapped parking pass
With a disabled parking permit (GPK), you can park for free in the Netherlands and most EU countries in general disabled parking spaces (recognizable by the wheelchair symbol). You are also often allowed to park for an unlimited period in blue zones and for up to 3 hours in no-parking zones (sign E1), on residential streets, and along broken yellow lines, provided you use a parking disc.
You must comply with local parking regulations.
You apply for the disabled parking permit in the municipality where you are registered.
Important rules and exceptions:
- Parking disc required: When parking in prohibited zones or in areas with a time limit (such as the 3-hour rule), you must use a parking disc.
- Exceptions to free parking: Not all disabled parking spaces are free. At hospitals, shopping centers, and on private property, you often still have to pay, or specific municipal rules apply.
- License plate parking spaces: You may not park in a disabled parking space with a specific license plate sign unless it is your own reserved space.
- Location: The card is personal, not linked to a vehicle, and must be clearly visible behind the windshield.
- No free pass: You may not park in places where it hinders safety, such as on sidewalks or bike paths.
