Confidentiality of personal data

The municipality keeps your personal data in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Various organizations can receive your personal data from the BRP. Which organizations these are depends partly on your personal situation. For example, whether you have children or a driver's license. See which organizations can get your personal data on the website of the National Government.

If you do not want certain organizations to receive your personal data, you can ask the municipality for confidentiality. You can also request this for your children up to the age of 16.

DigiDRequest confidentiality

How does it work?

You can request confidentiality in the municipality where you are registered.

Apply online

You can apply for confidentiality online or in writing with a form. Do not forget to send a copy of your valid proof of identity.

Applications at the counter

You can also apply for confidentiality in person at the town hall. Make an appointment by calling 14 0511 (without area code). Don't forget to bring your valid proof of identification.

Duration of the application

The municipal authorities are obliged to comply with your request within four weeks of your application and cannot impose any additional requirements. For example, the municipality cannot apply such a request for a certain period, no costs can be charged, and no motivation may be requested.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality means that the municipality cannot simply release your data to authorities. You have the right to the confidentiality of your personal data. If you request confidentiality, the municipality will always cooperate. However, sometimes the municipality may or must provide your data to certain authorities, even if you have requested confidentiality.

Confidentiality does not apply to all authorities

Confidentiality does not apply to providing your data to government institutions, such as the Tax Authorities, the police, or the National Vehicle and Driving License Registration Authority (RDW). In some other cases, the municipality weighs whether your interest in confidentiality outweighs the interest in providing the data. For example, when a lawyer requests your personal data for legal proceedings in which you are involved. The municipality will ask for your opinion in advance.

  • Request the confidentiality of your personal data from the municipality. Please include a copy of your valid proof of identity.
  • You can always cancel the confidentiality of your personal data.

Moving to another municipality

If you have requested confidentiality and then move to another municipality, you do not need to request confidentiality again.
