Combating slipperiness
When winter is approaching, roads can become slippery. The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is responsible for keeping municipal roads accessible when it is slippery or snowing. People and vehicles are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week for this purpose. View the gritting routes of Tytsjerksteradiel on this page.
How does it work?
We spread salt preventively when there is a risk of slipperiness. During the winter period, sensors in the road surface measure the temperature, salt content, and humidity. We combine this data with the weather forecast. This is how we decide whether we need to take action.
Where do we spread grit?
The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is responsible for all roads that are managed and maintained by the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel. We grit the following routes:
- Bus routes;
- Main access roads;
- District and/or neighborhood access roads;
- Through cycling routes.
At the bottom of this page you will find documents containing the gritting routes.
Footpaths and sidewalks
The municipality has limited capacity for gritting footpaths. We therefore ask you to contribute and clear the sidewalk in front of your home of snow and ice as much as possible. For yourself, but also especially for the elderly and less mobile people.
Provincial roads
There are several provincial roads in the municipality. These are the larger connecting roads, such as De Centrale As and the N355 from Leeuwarden to Groningen. The province itself combats slipperiness on these roads and applies its own rules. As a result, these roads may be gritted at different times.
Our material
When we go out to spread salt, we do so with 6 machines. With this deployment, we can salt all routes in 2.5 hours (it takes longer during snowfall and ice).
Unfortunately, the weather is not always predictable.
No matter how alert the road maintenance workers are, the weather can change suddenly. Therefore, preventative salting is not a guarantee that the roads will never be slippery. Due to unforeseen circumstances, some roads can suddenly become very slippery. Therefore, this winter too, be careful when temperatures are low!
