Gladness control

As winter approaches again, it can get slippery on the roads. The Municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is responsible for keeping the municipal roads passable when it is slippery or when it snows. For this, people and cars are on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week. View Tytsjerksteradiel's gritting routes on this page.

How does it work?

When there is a threat of slipperiness, we grit preventively. During the winter, sensors in the road surface measure temperature, salt content and humidity. We combine this data with the weather forecast. This is how we decide whether we need to take action.

Where do we scatter?

The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is responsible for all roads under the management and maintenance of the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel. We grit the following routes:

  • Bus routes;
  • Main access roads;
  • District and or neighborhood access roads;
  • Through bicycle routes.

At the bottom of this page you will find documents containing the gritting routes.

Footpaths and sidewalks

The municipality has limited capacity for gritting sidewalks. We therefore ask you to do your part and make the sidewalk in front of your house free of snow and ice as much as possible yourself. For yourself, but also for elderly and less mobile people.

Provincial roads

There are several provincial roads in the municipality. These are the larger connecting roads, such as De Centrale As and the N355 from Leeuwarden to Groningen. The province fights the ice on these roads itself and applies its own rules. As a result, these roads may be gritted at different times.

Our material

When we go out to grit we do so with 6 machines. With this deployment, we can grit all routes in 2.5 hours (it takes longer with snowfall and black ice).

Unfortunately, the weather is not always predictable

No matter how alert anti-icing crews are, the weather can suddenly turn. Preventive gritting is therefore no guarantee that the roads will never be slippery. Due to unforeseen circumstances, some roads can suddenly become very slippery. Therefore, this winter too, be careful in low temperatures!
