Corrugated metal roof installed before 1994? Check it for asbestos!
This summer, a pilot program will begin, allowing residents with a shed who are unsure whether their roof contains asbestos to submit a photo for evaluation. The initiative is intended to dispel doubts and quickly provide clarity regarding potential asbestos roofs.
Many asbestos roofs have been exposed to the elements for more than 30 years. Rain, frost, and sunlight cause these roofs to deteriorate, releasing asbestos fibers that are harmful to health. That is why it is important to know whether a roof contains asbestos.
Through the Asbestos-Free Roof Help Desk, participants receive an initial assessment of the likelihood of asbestos on their roof. They can then request a laboratory test to check the roof for asbestos. This is followed by advice on whether the roof should be removed.

Was your shed built before 1994? And does your roof consist of corrugated metal sheets? If so, the roofing material may contain asbestos. Take a photo of the outside of your roof and have it checked for free by the Asbestos-Free Roof Help Desk.
The pilot is part of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management’s nationwide “Asbestos-Free Roof” initiative, which aims to encourage roof owners to identify and address their asbestos roofs.
