380kV High-Voltage Connection Northern Netherlands

Electricity is a basic necessity; we cannot live without it. In the coming years, the need for (sustainable) electricity will continue to increase. It is therefore important that we have and maintain a reliable electricity grid with sufficient capacity for developments in supply and demand, now and in the future.

That is why new 380kV power connections are being constructed or planned in the Northern Netherlands.

Vierverlaten-Ens

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and grid operator TenneT are exploring the construction of a new 380kV power connection. This concerns the area between the high-voltage substations in Groningen (Vierverlaten) and the Noordoostpolder (Ens). The new connection is necessary for the energy transition and to prevent future bottlenecks in the electricity grid. In the coming years, the sustainable generation of electricity will increase significantly. The same applies to the demand for electricity from households and businesses. More information can be found on the Tennet project page.

TenneT is organizing 10 information meetings about the new high-voltage connection between Vierverlaten and Ens

TenneT is organizing 10 information meetings between January 13 and February 12, 2025. You can talk to TenneT employees about the new high-voltage connection between Vierverlaten (near Groningen) and Ens (Noordoostpolder).

Visitors can walk in between 13:00 and 17:00 to ask questions or have a conversation. The locations of the meetings are in the vicinity of route alternatives that we are investigating. For those interested from the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel, the meeting on Monday, February 3 in Burgum is the closest.

Route Alternatives

At the end of January 2024, the scoping and level of detail memorandum (NRD) was adopted. This research plan contains route alternatives with a corridor of 5 kilometres wide. Within these corridors, lines have been developed: the route alternatives. These routes are narrower and form the basis for the studies that are currently being worked on. The ministers are expected to take a decision on which route alternative is preferred at the end of 2025.

More demand for electricity

TenneT wants to construct the new high-voltage connection for increased electricity transport, partly to enable the energy transition. This is because a lot of electricity will be generated by the sun or wind in the future. The new high-voltage connection is necessary to prevent future bottlenecks in the electricity grid. TenneT expects more bottlenecks on the electricity grid from 2025 due to the increasing demand (for electricity) and the transition to sustainable energy. After 2030, the risk of more bottlenecks will increase.
