Royal recognition for Burgum astronomer Pieter Dijkstra
The Observeum in Burgum celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sunday afternoon. In addition to marking this milestone, there was a special surprise for volunteer Pieter Dijkstra. He received a Royal Honor from Mayor Kanter Breuker in recognition of his exceptional and long-standing dedication to the observatory and the museum.
Since the late 1970s, Pieter Dijkstra has played a leading role in establishing a public observatory in Burgum. The Fryslân Public Observatory Foundation was established in 1979, and the observatory officially opened its doors in 1986.
Over the next four decades, Dijkstra remained the familiar face: the guide, the builder, and the driving force behind the Observeum. He organized numerous stargazing evenings, lectures, film screenings, courses, and programs focused on notable astronomical phenomena. His volunteer dedication and enthusiasm for introducing both young and old to the wonders of the universe make him a great asset to the community.
Mayor Kanter Breuker addressed Dijkstra personally during the ceremony:“When you say ‘Sterrenwacht,’ you automatically say ‘Pieter Dijkstra’ as well. You have enriched our community with your dream, your passion, and your extraordinary dedication. It has pleased the King to honor you for this, and that is more than deserved.”
Following the mayor’s remarks, Pieter Dijkstra was presented with the Royal Honor. For the many people in attendance, the award was a special highlight of the anniversary celebration.
