Is your child unable to travel to school on their own due to a physical or intellectual disability? If so, you may be eligible for school transportation. In some cases, your child may also qualify for this service if the school is located far away.

How does it work?

Check this schedule to see if your child is eligible for school transportation.

There are conditions for transportation:

  • Your child is staying in our municipality.
  • The school your child attends is a regular elementary school, a special elementary school, a special education school, or a (special) secondary school. The distance between your home and the school is 6 kilometers or more.
  • Your child will attend the school that is closest to your home and best suited to your child.
  • For students attending secondary (special) education, reimbursement is provided only if they are unable to travel to school independently due to a permanent disability.
  • Does your child attend a regular elementary school (BO) and are you eligible for reimbursement? If so, you must pay a co-payment each year. This amount is set at the national level. If school transportation is approved, the municipality will inform you of the co-payment amount. An exception applies to students with a permanent disability; they are exempt from the co-payment.
  • Are you ineligible for school transportation but unable to afford the cost of transporting your child? Please contact us. We’d be happy to help you find a solution. You can send an email to leerlingenvervoer@t-diel.nl or call 140511.

Types of transportation

There are various types of student transportation, and sometimes these are combined. The amount of reimbursement you receive depends on the type of education, your child’s age, and their disability.

  • First, we’ll check whether your child can ride a bike (with supervision) to school. If your child doesn’t have a bike or you can’t afford one, please visit the Stichting Leergeld website ( ) to see what options are available.
  • Can your child travel by public transportation (with an escort)? If so, your child is eligible for a public transportation reimbursement.
  • If you can drive your child to school yourself, you may be eligible for a mileage allowance.
  • If your child cannot ride a bike or take public transportation, and you are unable to drop them off or pick them up yourself, they may be able to take special transportation (a taxi van) to school.

Getting to school on your own: by bike or public transportation

Starting around age 10, children become increasingly independent. This is a good time to consider whether your child can (gradually) travel to school on their own. Being able to travel independently boosts your child’s self-confidence and sense of freedom, especially as they prepare to transition to secondary school.

Practicing together: how do you go about it?

Independence is something you learn step by step, and we’re happy to help with that. You can choose the mode of transportation that best suits the route and your child:

  • Learning to ride a bike:Practice the safest route to school together. Teach your child how to handle tricky intersections and other traffic situations.
  • Learning to travel by public transportation:Take a trip together by bus or train. Practice checking in and out, finding the right stop, and what to do in case of delays. The municipality may reimburse public transportation costs for both the student and the accompanying adult during this practice period.

Support from the municipality

We understand that this transition requires time and effort. That is why we offer support to help you learn to travel independently. If this is not (yet) feasible due to a disability, we will work with you to find a suitable solution, such as adapted transportation.

What documents do you need to submit the application?

In order to process your application, the following documents are required:
