Frequently asked questions about student transportation

Do you have a question about student transport? We have listed the most frequently asked questions and answers for you.

My child is sick; who do I contact to report absence from student transport?

If your child is ill, this must be reported to Jobinder as soon as possible. This can be done by telephone, via the portal, and via email. You cannot report this to the driver. This is because of possible replacements, and the sick reports and changes will not reach the replacement driver.

If you are approved for your own transportation or public transport, you do not need to unregister your child.

Will the bus wait if my child is accidentally not ready?

Jobinder assumes that the children are ready 5 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time. There is 2 minutes to get in. For children in wheelchairs, this is 3 minutes. The time starts running when the driver opens the door.

When does a child qualify for student transport?

A child may be eligible for student transport if he or she cannot travel to school independently. This mainly concerns children who attend special education due to physical or behavioral limitations.

If parents want a certain type of education for their child because of their religious or philosophical beliefs (for example, Christian, Islamic, or Waldorf education) and this education is not available in the immediate vicinity, an application can also be made for transport.

Who can apply for student transport?

The school transport can be requested by the parents, guardians and custodians. It can also be requested by an institution where the child is (temporarily) staying.

What are the rules if my child needs to be picked up and dropped off at a second address?

  • Your child stays at the address on fixed days.
  • The address can be scheduled in the same route as the route from the home address.
  • The address is within a 10-kilometer radius of the home address (as measured by Google Maps).
  • It is an address for professional childcare or a childminder. It can also be a family member or another suitable care address.
  • It cannot be an address for therapy, day treatment, day care, or a sports facility.

There are some exceptions, and the municipality is always willing to consider individual situations to find the most suitable solution, for example, for parents with flexible schedules. Please contact the municipality for this.

Does student transport have to be applied for every year?

Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel work with multi-year decisions. This means that, where possible, a decision is issued for several school years, sometimes even for the entire school period.

If a child moves or changes schools, a new application must be submitted. This is because an assessment will need to be made based on the new address details to determine whether the transport can continue. It is also possible that provided reimbursements or personal contributions will need to be adjusted.

How long does an application take?

We are legally obliged to make a decision within 8 weeks of receiving the application. If this is not possible, we must inform you of this by sending a letter of postponement.

In most cases, we will send the decision within 2 to 3 weeks of receiving the application.

Is there a personal contribution for student transport?

Yes, for regular primary education you have to pay a personal contribution. Regular primary education includes schools based on religious or philosophical beliefs. For the 2023-2024 school year, the personal contribution is € 601.35.

Some children attend a school outside their own area because it offers a program that better suits their above-average abilities. This also falls under regular education, and a personal contribution must be paid for this. This personal contribution is also called the threshold amount and is determined each year based on public transport prices.

If the school is more than 20 kilometers from the home address, parents must pay an income-related contribution. The exact amount of this contribution can be found in the decision letter.

There is a change in school hours, who do I need to inform?

If your child travels with Jobinder, you can report this via the Jobinder portal. Do you bring and pick up your child yourself? Or does your child travel by public transport? Then you do not have to report this to us.

Explanation of the Jobinder portal and modification form, who does what and when

Are there any changes that affect student transportation? If so, you must always report this to Jobinder using the modification form. The municipality will always see the change and can keep track of the changes. In many cases, Jobinder can adjust the changes without the intervention of the municipality.

If the changes concern relocations, internship applications and changes in address details, the municipality will contact you to discuss the next steps.

I would like to provide pupil transportation myself. How do I arrange that and what will I be reimbursed?

To apply, submit a request for student transportation (even if your child already has student transportation). The municipality will first assess whether your child is entitled to student transportation for new applications. If they are entitled, we will calculate the reimbursement. The amount of the reimbursement will be stated in the decision and will be transferred to you in 2 periods per school year. Any personal contribution will be directly deducted from the amount to be received. This will also be stated in the decision.

The amount of the compensation is;

  • Car: € 0.21 per km up to and including 31-12-2023
  • Car: € 0.22 per km from 01-01-2024
  • Bicycle: € 0.09 per km

Travel expense reimbursements are also possible, but for this, you will receive a public transport pass from us, possibly with an accompanying person pass.

Who applies for student transport in the case of co-parenting?

Does the child need transportation from both addresses? Then both parents must submit an application themselves.

The mail arrived at the second address

Unfortunately, we experienced a period where a lot of mail ended up at the wrong (often second) address. This was because our old system directly recognized a second address as the mailing address. We now have a new system where this problem does not occur. If this still happens to you, please contact us at leerlingenvervoer@t-diel.nl.

Choosing a school that is not the closest, what are the rules?

That depends on the situation and is assessed per student. If you do not choose the nearest school and there is no valid reason to deviate, the application will be rejected.

How long is my child allowed to travel by taxi?

Your child is allowed to travel by taxi 3 times the single journey time, with a maximum of 1.5 hours. Jobinder takes this into account when scheduling the rides.

My child no longer needs student transport; how do I report this?

If you use Jobinder, you can report this via the Jobinder change form.

If you use public transport or your own transport, you must report this by email to leerlingenvervoer@t-diel.nl.
