Liberation Route Europe: The Liberation of East Frisia

81 years ago, on April 14, more than half of East Friesland was liberated by Canadian troops. On this day, Liberation Route Europe launched a 160-kilometer themed route passing through 21 significant sites, right across East Friesland.

As you travel along the route, exploring monuments and stories, you’ll experience how the fighting began in early April 1945 in the forests south of Oosterwolde. You’ll also learn how the resistance then fought to defend the bridges over the canal at Burgum, Kootstertille, and Augustinusga (Blauwverlaat).
The Liberation Route was created through a collaboration between the municipalities of Smallingerland, Opsterland, Ooststellingwerf, Achtkarspelen, Tytsjerksteradiel, and Smelne's Erfskip.
