Informal care is intensive care or support that exceeds usual care. This form of care is from a social relationship between the informal caregiver and the person being cared for: for example, someone who takes in their parents to care for them in their old age. Under certain conditions, an informal care home can be built near an existing home. It is also possible to use an existing outbuilding at an existing home as an informal care home or to realize the informal care home in the main building.

How does it work?

In a number of cases, you need a permit to build a home for informal care, however, this is not always required.

  • If you need a permit, we advise you to inquire with the Municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel. The municipality can be reached via telephone number 140511 or via gemeente@t-diel.nl. 

Terms

To build a sheltered housing unit, you must meet a number of conditions. These conditions apply both to building a home without a permit and to building a home with a permit.

  • At least one of the occupants of the informal care home provides or receives informal care from an occupant of the primary residence;
  • A maximum of two people live in the family care home;
  • The need for informal care must be able to be demonstrated with a statement from your family doctor, nurse or social-medical advisor: send this to the municipality as well;
  • The informal care home must comply with the 2012 Building Code, Section 1.14 "Temporary Construction.
  • After the termination of the informal care, the new home may no longer be used as living quarters, but may be used, for example, as a garage or storage room;
  • The home is provided with its own house number if it is an independent dwelling (lockable and equipped with areas such as kitchen and bathroom). In this case, you will receive an assessment for sewer and garbage taxes for both the main house and the home for informal care;
  • You will receive one assessment for the property tax (OZB) because the home is located in the same yard of the main house. This will be higher because the value of the new informal care home is included, see link in the right bar for more information.
