North East Friesland municipalities are strongly committed to future-proof living
During the first Frisian Housing Table, the Frisian municipalities, the Province of Fryslân, and the national government signed the revised Frisian regional housing deals today. This is an important step for the Northeast Friesland region: the previously started free programming experiment has now been officially established until 2030. This allows the four ANNO municipalities – Achtkarspelen, Dantumadiel, Noardeast-Fryslân, and Tytsjerksteradiel – to retain the space and control to align housing construction with local needs.
In total, the revised housing deal includes agreements for the construction of 3,346 homes by 2030 in Northeast Friesland. Across all of Friesland, 22,406 homes will be added, which is 4,686 more than initially agreed upon in the original housing deals. It is important for housing development throughout Friesland that the scale and unique character of Friesland remain central. Small-scale housing projects not only contribute to addressing the housing shortage but also enhance the quality of life in villages and communities. Additionally, a good balance between affordable owner-occupied homes, social housing, and other forms of housing is essential to meet diverse housing needs.
"This turnaround not only gives us the space to build where the need is greatest, but also the confidence that we can do this together with you, residents, and other stakeholders. In villages, appropriate housing is indispensable for livability," according to the aldermen of the ANNO municipalities.
By signing, the ANNO municipalities, together with the province and the national government, are strongly committed to a future-proof and balanced housing supply. Innovations such as circular and biobased construction receive extra attention. At the same time, bottlenecks such as grid congestion and nitrogen remain on the agenda. The region underlines the importance of reciprocity from the national government: structural support is necessary to actually realize local ambitions. Annual monitoring and adjustment ensure that the housing deal continues to meet the region's actual needs.
