Maintenance and management of banks along waterways

Fryslân has more than 1,700 kilometers of shorelines along waterways. Starting May 1, 2024, the province will be responsible for the shorelines along commercial waterways. The banks that are important for water quality or where there is significant current are managed by the Wetterskip. If a public bank is located within a built-up area, the municipality is responsible for its management. This leaves approximately 400 kilometers of banks, the management of which is the responsibility of private individuals or other agencies.
