Maintenance and management of banks along waterways
Fryslân has over 1,700 kilometers of shorelines along waterways. As of May 1, 2024, the province is responsible for the shorelines along commercial waterways. The shorelines that are important for water quality or have significant currents are managed by the Wetterskip (water authority). If a public shoreline is located in a built-up area, the municipality is responsible for its management. This leaves approximately 400 kilometers of shoreline, the management of which is the responsibility of private individuals or other organizations.
You can see who is responsible for the management of the shorelines on this map https://www.fryslan.frl/oeversvaarwegen.
Are you responsible for management?
If you are responsible for managing a bank along a waterway, you may be eligible for a subsidy. Under certain conditions, the government contributes to the management and maintenance of banks. More information about the subsidy and how to apply for it can be found on the province's website: https://www.fryslan.frl/oeverfonds.
