Advertising on or attached to a building

You are not allowed to just place advertising on or at a building. The advertising may not, for example, endanger traffic. Do you want to place an advertising sign on a building? Or do you use advertising lighting? Then you apply for an environmental permit from the municipality.

This concerns advertising that you place on or attached to a building. This includes signs, banners, and texts or images on walls.

How does it work?

You can check whether you need to apply for a permit via the Environment Desk. You can submit the application online immediately. You can do this with DigiD. Companies can only submit the application online. Please use eHerkenning for this.

Apply for a permit

Please complete the application form in full, providing the following information:

  • Why you want to place advertising;
  • the size of the advertisement;
  • A drawing or photograph of the advertisement.

Send the application form with the required documents to the municipality. You will receive a confirmation of receipt. After that, you will automatically receive a message whether you will be granted the permit.

Additional information

The municipality may refuse a permit for advertising with illuminated signs for the following reasons:

  • The advertisement does not comply with the Light Pollution Directive of the Dutch Foundation for Illumination Technology (inquire about this at the municipality)
  • The advertisement does not meet the requirements of urban development;
  • If the advertising hinders traffic safety;
  • If the advertising hinders users of surrounding buildings.
