North-East Friesland II Regional Deal: Let's work together!

Over the next five years, the Northeast Friesland region will be working on the Northeast Friesland II Regional Deal. With a joint investment of €36 million (€18 million from the national government and €18 million from the region), the region and the national government will be focusing on housing, mobility, entrepreneurship, and cooperation to make the region future-proof and sustainable. The decision-making process in the councils of the relevant authorities in the region regarding the program for the coming years has been completed, which means it is now time to get started and "mei-inoar troch te pakken" (work together).

Unlike the first Regional Deal (the Acceleration Agenda), this second deal is not a subsidy scheme. This time, the projects are focused on structural, regional, and local solutions for the challenges in the region. The projects are designated and coordinated by the joint authorities. This is a continuation of many years of cooperation between four municipalities (Achtkarspelen, Dantumadiel, Noardeast-Fryslân, and Tytsjerksteradiel) and the province of Fryslân.

How does the deal contribute to the region?

The Regional Deal is not an abstract plan; it is a concrete and ambitious program that will make the region more future-proof. Whether it concerns young families looking for affordable housing, students and other residents who want to find a job in the region, or residents who want villages to remain easily accessible, these projects contribute to a better future for Northeast Friesland.

From plan to practice

The Regional Deal translates ambitions into concrete projects that have an immediate impact on residents. In the coming years, we will focus on three pillars, through which we will achieve the following, among other things:

Noflik wenje – pleasant and affordable living

  • Accelerating housing construction for young people, first-time buyers, and the elderly.
  • Improving or creating new meeting places in the villages.
  • Pilots of new residential care concepts, with the aim of enabling older people to live at home for longer.

"Together we can achieve more. By joining forces, we can realize projects that make our region even more livable and attractive to live and work in."

Kanter Breuker, mayor of Tytsjerksteradiel and administrative leader of the Northeast Friesland II Regional Deal.

Ferbining – better accessibility and smart mobility

  • Connections and transfer points (mobility hubs) in Dokkum-Zuid, Buitenpost-Kollum, Feanwâlden-Burgum, and De Westereen, where residents and visitors can easily transfer between bus, train, bicycle, and car.
  • Cycle routes, such as the Leeuwarden-Dokkum route through the Trynwâlden, for safe and fast cycling connections.

Undernimmend - space for growth and innovation

  • Students are introduced to local businesses so they can see the opportunities our region has to offer.
  • Support for SMEs to become more sustainable, digitize, and collaborate.
  • Space for entrepreneurs, with examples such as improving business parks and centers.

In addition, with the Regional Deal, we are strengthening cooperation between municipalities, the province, the national government, social partners, and the business community, so that we are in a stronger position and can seize opportunities.

What lies ahead

The first projects will start in the coming months. More information will then be available on the websites of the partners involved. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@noordoost-fryslan.nl.

What is a Region Deal?

A Region Deal is a collaboration between central government and regions to increase broad prosperity where it is needed most. In addition to financial support, strengthening local cooperation is an important goal. The Regio Deal Northeast Fryslân II builds on the earlier deal (2020-2025) and provides a structural impetus for the region.
