Driver's license

The table below shows the various costs at a glance.

Please bring the following to your appointment at the town hall: 

• A valid proof of identity; 
• A valid passport photo (this color passport photo must not be older than 6 months); 
• When extending or adding a category: your old driving license (even if it has expired);
• For complete applications at the town hall: bring cash or a bank card.

You cannot take your driving license with you immediately. It will be ready for you at the town hall after 5 working days. Collection is possible without an appointment.

Your new driver's license will be ready for you at the town hall after 5 working days. You can pick it up without an appointment. Please collect your driver's license within 3 months, otherwise the document will expire and you will have to submit a new application. 

You can renew online or add a category via the RDW as follows:

1. You can submit your application online via the RDW. You will need a DigiD app with ID check for this. You can pay for your driving license immediately via iDEAL.  
2. Have a passport photo taken by an RDW-certified photographer. Bring your current driving license with you. Sign your name for your new driving license at the photographer's. The photographer sends your signature digitally and securely to the RDW. You will receive an email from the RDW with the confirmation.  
3. You will receive an email from the RDW as soon as your driving license is ready. After that, you can pick up your driving license at the municipality. This is possible without an appointment. Bring your old driving license with you and hand it in when you pick up your new driving license.

You can get your driver's license from the age of 17^th. Until your 18^th birthday, you must drive under the supervision of a coach sitting next to you. For example, one of your parents can become a coach. You can have a maximum of 5 coaches. The rules are as follows:

• Coaches must register with the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW).
• After the coaches have registered, you can request a supervisor pass.
• After you have received the supervisor pass, you can apply for your driver's license at the municipality.

If you need your driving license quickly, you can submit an urgent application. Make an appointment for this by calling 14 0511.  

If you apply for the driving license before 2:00 PM, you can usually pick it up the next working day from 9:30 AM. You have to pay extra for an urgent application. 

Report this as soon as possible, even if you are abroad.  

Report a missing item online via the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) 

Report the loss of your driving license via the RDW website (DigiD required). The loss will be registered immediately. Then make an appointment with the municipality to apply for a new driving license. 

Report a missing item at the counter 

If you want to apply for a new driving license immediately, please make an appointment. You can fill in the Declaration of Loss during the application. 

Police report for loss/theft abroad 

If you lose your driving license or it is stolen abroad, report it to the local police. With the foreign police report, you can complete the Declaration of Loss at the municipality and apply for a new driving license. 

If you are 75 years or older, have a disability, or want to apply for a truck or bus driver's license, you must complete a health certificate. This contains questions about your health. The fastest way to apply for a health certificate is digitally via the CBR website.

Then request a paper health certificate via the website of the CBR. 

Are you 75 years or older? 

Then there is also the option of picking up a paper health certificate at the town hall. 

What happens after you submit an application? 

The CBR (Dutch Driver's License Authority) decides whether you are healthy enough to drive. You will automatically receive a message about this. 

Costs

The costs for a health certificate are € 45.25.

Do you have a foreign driving license and do you live in the Netherlands? Then you are initially allowed to drive temporarily in the Netherlands with the foreign driving license. After that, you must exchange the driving license via your municipality, or, if this is not possible, take a driving test at the CBR. 

• Go to the municipality; please make an appointment for this.
• Request an 'Application for Exchange for Dutch Driving License' form at the town hall and complete it. 
• If your request is approved, you will receive a letter from the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) within 10 working days, stating when you can collect your Dutch driving license from the municipality.
