What to do if your sewer is clogged?

Always report sewer problems to the municipality first to avoid incurring unnecessary costs.

  • As the owner, you are responsible for the sewer line on your property and its location.
  • The municipality is responsible for maintaining the sewer system up to the boundary of your property and for maintaining the sewer pumping station.
  • If the clog is outside your property boundaries, the municipality will fix the clog.
  • Is the blockage in sewers that the municipality is not responsible for? If so, contact the owner or landlord of the property.
  • Also check with your neighbors to see if they have sewer problems.

Where is the blockage?

To find out where the clog is located, it is best to dig up the unblocked piece of property or yard divider to determine whether the clog is on your property or on the municipality's property.

For the location of the drain / yard separation manhole, please contact the municipality. The municipality knows the location of the drain. Unfortunately, the municipality does not have information about the location of the drain.

Contrôle unblocker / yard separation manhole

You can check the de-clogging / yard separation manhole, by digging it up (or having it dug up).

There is often a screw-on lid or something similar on the unblocker that you can open.

Is this unblocker/yard divider full of water?

Then it means that the blockage is in the stretch between the main sewer and the unclogging piece (usually on the municipality's property).

In this case, call the municipality again. The municipality will then come by to fix the blockage and repair the possible defect (by defect, think of root growth, subsidence, crack or fracture).

Connection to sewage pumping station

When problems arise, always call the municipality first to avoid incurring unnecessary expenses.

  • If your home is connected to a sewage pumping station and you are experiencing problems with the disposal of your wastewater (toilet, bathroom, kitchen), see if the red light on the box at the pumping station is on.
  • If the red light is on, there is a problem with the pump or the water level in the sump, call the municipality!
  • But even if the red light is not on and you are still experiencing problems with your wastewater disposal (toilet, bathroom, kitchen), there could still be a problem with the pump (no power) or a blockage in the connection from the house to the sump. If so, call the municipality as well!

For whom are the costs?

  • If you have dug up the drain and it turns out that there is a blockage in the municipal part of the sewer system and you call the municipality about it, the municipality will solve it. The municipality will then not charge you unless it turns out that you are to blame for the blockage.
  • If there is a problem with the sewerage pumping station, the municipality will fix it. Again, the municipality will not charge you unless it turns out that the problem with the sewerage pumping station can be blamed on you.
  • If you did not call the municipality first, but immediately called a unblocking company, after which it turned out that the blockage or defect is not on your plot, but in the municipal part or that the sewerage pumping station is not functioning properly? Then these costs are for your own account.

Please note that in this case the municipality does not reimburse the costs incurred for the unblocking.

Costs for digging up the unblocked piece - yard separation manhole by a (unblock) company, are always at your expense.
