Theun Pietersma of Noardburgum Rescues 88-Year-Old Man from a Ditch and Receives Special Recognition
Theun Pietersma of Noardburgum received a special award today from the Royal Society for the Rescue of Drowning Persons. He was honored for his courageous actions on June 20, 2026.
While out on a bike ride, Pietersma saw a man who had fallen into a ditch. The man, who was using a walker, was in danger of going under. Pietersma didn’t hesitate for a moment. He stopped immediately and rushed to his aid. Thanks to his quick action, the 88-year-old man was safely pulled from the water. Neighbors then took the man home. He did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.
The Royal Society for the Rescue of Drowning Persons expresses its deep appreciation for Pietersma’s alertness, decisiveness, and willingness to provide immediate assistance. According to the organization, he thereby made a significant contribution to saving a fellow human being in a life-threatening situation.
To mark this special occasion, Mayor Kanter Breuker welcomed Theun Pietersma to City Hall. There, he praised Pietersma for his courageous actions.
