Getting married abroad

I want to get married abroad

Would you like to get married in another country? In that case, you may need a certificate of no impediment to marriage. This document states that you are not currently married and that you and your partner are permitted to marry under Dutch law.

What are the conditions?

  • You or your partner has Dutch nationality.
  • You or your partner are registered in our Personal Records Database (BRP) or have been registered in Tytsjerksteradiel.
  • Do you no longer live in the Netherlands? Then you can request the statement from the municipality where you last lived before moving abroad.
  • Have you never been registered in the Netherlands? If so, request the certificate from the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you wish to get married. For more information, visit the websitenederlandwereldwijd.nl.
  • Minors require permission from their parents (or guardian) and, in some cases, also from the government (the Minister of Justice and Security).
  • Placed under guardianship? Then you first need permission from the guardian.

Required for your application

  • Valid proof of identity for you and your partner.
  • In addition, depending on your situation, you may need additional documents.

Below you can read in which situations we require additional documents and what requirements they must meet. In all cases, we require recent documents that are no more than 6 months old.

All documents must be submitted in their original form. A copy of identity documents is sufficient. Check Legalization of foreign documents for use in the Netherlands | NederlandWereldwijd to see whether your document needs to be legalized or translated.

Foreign deeds or other foreign documents must be written in Dutch, English, French, or German. If this is not the case, you must first have the documents translated by a translator certified in the Netherlands. Sometimes you must have foreign deeds legalized in the country of origin. Check with the municipality for more information.
