Safety at festivals
Big events attract a lot of visitors. Everyone goes there thinking about celebrating, and the last thing you want to think about is that something might happen. So we often don't think about simple things like escape routes, first aid locations or sufficient drinking water in hot weather. Everything is well organized and meets safety requirements, right?
Still, without too much extra effort, you can prepare yourself in case something happens and panic would break out. And you are thereby helping not only yourself but also the emergency services. Think a little ahead: Tink Foarút!
Panic in a crowd
If something happens during an event, everyone often wants to leave the grounds or building as quickly as possible. There is then a chance that panic will set in. Panic in a crowd can lead to unpleasant and awkward situations. People can get trapped, run under and suffocate. The trigger is often something unexpected: a fire, a fight, a sudden change in the weather.
What can you do beforehand?
At the event site, for example, pay attention to signage, escape routes and first aid stations. In warm weather, make sure you have plenty of drinking water and sunscreen. And in advance you can find an overview map of the terrain and practical tips on websites of most events. Or listen to Omrop Fryslân (92.2 FM). The broadcaster often broadcasts news about an event.
What safety measures are in place?
Anyone organizing an event must have a permit. The municipality issuing the permit imposes requirements. Measures must be taken for fire safety, emergency exits, first aid facilities and accessibility of the site for emergency services such as fire, police and ambulances. During many events, emergency services are on site or near an event so they can intervene quickly if something happens. All of these measures combined with your preparation, can ensure that in the event of an emergency, too much panic is avoided.
