Exploration of the Gytsjerk Collaborative School

In Gytsjerk, an exploratory study has recently been conducted to determine whether the Ichthusschool and OBS Thrimwalda could merge into a single collaborative school. This study was led by Sake Saakstra, who served as an independent facilitator. He spoke with the board members of Adenium and Oarsprong, as well as the principals, staff, and parent-teacher associations of both schools.

The main conclusion is that there is support for continuing efforts to establish a single collaborative school in Gytsjerk. Both schools view collaboration as an opportunity to continue providing high-quality, sustainable education in the future. In doing so, the strengths of both schools can be leveraged and further developed within a new bernemienskip or child center, in collaboration with childcare providers and community partners.

At the same time, several areas for attention have been identified. These include social safety, the educational environment, the identity of the new school, the educational concept, clear communication, and the balance between moving forward quickly and proceeding with care. For this reason, no formal decision has yet been made regarding the establishment of a collaborative school. With the completion of the exploratory phase, a research phase is now beginning.

Before the summer break, the school boards will work toward clarifying the governing authority for the potential new school. After the summer, work will continue on three key areas: a shared vision for education, a shared vision for identity, and the formal steps toward decision-making, including the merger impact assessment.

Gytsjerk thus represents a first concrete step in the broader initiative to create future-proof elementary education in the Trynwâlden region. The experiences and insights gained here will also contribute to the further development of education and school facilities throughout the region.
