Transport ban due to bird flu in Drogeham

Bird flu has been detected at a laying hen farm in Drogeham (municipality of Achtkarspelen). To prevent the spread of the virus, the approximately 120,000 birds at the site are being culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

Transport ban

A transport ban has been imposed immediately in the entire 10-kilometer zone around the affected farm. This means:

  • No birds or eggs (hatching or table eggs) may be transported within the 10-kilometer zone.
  • The ban also applies to the disposal of bird manure, used litter, as well as other animals and animal products from farms with birds in the zone.
  • The national caging and fencing requirement remains in place: commercially kept birds must be caged.
  • For hobby birds, the fencing requirement applies; ensure that contacts with wild birds are limited and that the animals are adequately protected.

Do you own or are involved with a poultry farm in the zone? If so, strictly adhere to the ban on transport.

Why this ban?

These measures are necessary to prevent further spread of the bird flu virus to other poultry farms and areas, protecting animal and human health.

Do you have any questions?

Contact the municipality if you want to know if your location falls within the 10-km zone or what measures apply to your situation. Follow further messages from NVWA and the municipality; additional measures such as sampling or additional restrictions may follow.
