Applying for an alien's passport takes 2 to 4 months. The procedure takes a long time because the IND and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also decide on your application.

Alien's passport

If you have a valid residence permit, but not (yet) the Dutch nationality, you can apply for an alien's passport at the municipality. With an alien's passport you can travel to all countries, except to your country of origin.

Alien or refugee

If you have refugee status, do not apply for an alien's passport, but a refugee passport at the municipality.

How much does it cost?

An alien's passport costs € 65.70.

How does it work?

You can apply for an alien's passport if you meet the following requirements:

  • You cannot get a passport from your own country.
  • You are registered with the municipality.
  • You are not registered as a refugee.
