Marcel Smit (1977), a singer and songwriter living in Burgum, has been named ‘Wâldsjonger’ (regional singer-songwriter) of Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel for the next two years. Marcel was involved in music at a young age and released his first full (Wâld) Frisian-language album in 2011. In the meantime, he has three albums to his name and, as a songwriter, has written a variety of songs for other artists. In addition to his solo performances, Marcel also performs on stage with others. For the Frisicana theatre program, for example, he is currently touring the province with Gurbe Douwstra and Piter Wilkens. Meanwhile, the songs of this Wâldpyk ambassador are also indispensable from the annual Frisian Top 100. Marcel considers it a great honor to be a Wâldsjonger and, as a true Wâldpyk, wants to promote the Wâlden even more with his songs in the coming two years.

Poems and songs

To stimulate cultural and literary life, we have appointed a village poet. The village poet (Wâlddichter or Wâldsjonger) writes about four Frisian poems or song lyrics a year. He or she performs the poems or songs at special occasions or events. All poems/songs are published in De Feanster and Actief. The village poet is appointed for two years.

Alvedoarpe tour

Made by: Bente, Jelly, Jelliena and Eline (CSG Liudger Burgum)

It really started with a small idea
Through friends on a beautiful evening
A walking tour and Burgum is the first
The sheep and their lamb are in the field
Yes, we will walk through that field tomorrow
To participate, we didn't need much

Chorus:
This is how the Forests brought us beautifully
A new eleven villages tour
We could make a tradition of it
You see the buttercups standing there
The joy will always remain
The landscape here will touch every runner

Creating a route was done quickly
Past Burgum and about ten villages
Everyone walks through it with a lot of fun
We already had fun making it
The sun shines here on the land
Everyone wants to walk such a village tour

Brechje:
We are almost at the end of the tour
We are coming to the last bend
Over the bridge and then we are inside
The beer is now coming out of the bag
That comes in handy at the end
A good price without really winning anything

The song 'Underweis' (On the Way) was created for the new edition of the booklet 'Doarpskuierkes yn Tytsjerksteradiel' (Village Walks in Tytsjerksteradiel) and sung at the presentation of the booklet on April 25, 2024, in Stania State in Oentsjerk.

Underway

Welcome to the heart of the Wâlden
In the villages of Tytsjerksteradiel
Although they are sometimes a bit reserved here
The area here still has a soul

You will feel that soul
Whichever route you take here
The landscape will make your eyes shine
On the border of sand and peat

Let yourself be guided along a meadow
What is enclosed by a tree wall
Where heather once adorned the land
Time has not yet damaged the soul

The wind brings you the stories
Along the water also on your way
Fables to get lost in
And that again in every village

Pick the fruits along the paths
Take a walk through open fields
Through a forest to unwind
See how one thing differs from another

The sun will always shine here
On the most beautiful piece of Frisian land
If you also find that upon arrival
Then your soul has found you along the way

The song 'Frijdom wie de heechste wet' (Freedom Was the Highest Law) was created for and sung at the commemoration of the Battle of Blauforlaet on April 11, 2024.

'Freedom was the highest law'

It's almost unimaginable now
That freedom was fought for here
Those who now cross the bridge
Do not dwell on that event

Passers-by don't have to flee
Not to fight for their existence
They can just use the bridge
To go over or underneath it

Let the bridge be an example
For what connects one with the other
As a goal to come to each other
So that every form of hatred disappears

There was a fight here for the bridge
And right after that we were liberated
One can reach the highest law
If there is a bridge first

The poem 'De Sport' (The Sport) was created for and sung at the honoring of sports champions in Tytsjerksteradiel on March 5, 2024, in the town hall in Burgum.

Sports

If the newspaper falls on the mat on a beautiful summer morning
Then preferably the one from Monday and then I'll make the coffee
While the scent spreads here of that first cup of comfort
I'll put the world news aside because sports come first here

When reading the headlines, I make a choice for myself
Which piece do I read first, well, what comes first?
The Premier League, the Tour de France or Formula 1
My preference is usually a little closer to home

How Jelmar would be, did the weekend bring him something
Modesto, Thijs and DFS had wished that I had thought
Dy Nina and Koerina do something different than GVV
But they all went home with a trophy

This way I stay up to date with regional talent
And I get the most out of my subscription
I read other news more like a novel
But sports and sports achievements are what make me happy

While the athletes are already working on a new goal
There is still local attention to what stood out last year
Because we have a prize for that and it is relevant
Because with such an incentive my newspaper remains interesting

The song 'Nocht en Wille' (Pleasure and Will) was created for and sung at the presentation of the Achtkarspelen Entrepreneur Award on November 9, 2023, in De Lantearne in Surhuisterveen.

Pleasure and Joy

Pleasure and joy can lift a lot
Yes, that keeps a person going
Take some joy and some pleasure
That will get you a long way
But can you look beyond it
Do you constantly rediscover yourself
Then the world really opens up
And pleasure and joy come along

Arriving through insight and hard work
Finally above the midfield
Then you will surely be mowed down again
But that also brings some progress
Although the skin then becomes a bit thicker
The feeling does not change
That even increases sooner
Adversity also gives new needs

Candle Song:
Joy and pleasure can lift a lot
Yes, that keeps a person going
Take some pleasure and some joy
That will get you a long way

Dare to take a first step
Into an unknown world
Then you write your own laws
And then criticism leaves you cold
Doing and daring is rewarded
With respect even more than money
It is also that appreciation
What lifts one higher

Even if it's done with fun and joy
There is no price that covers it
The greatest price of this gift
Is appreciation and respect

The song 'Lêze en skriuwe' (Reading and Writing) was created for the Week of Reading and Writing from September 8 to 15, 2023, with the aim of raising awareness and better recognizing literacy issues (low literacy).

Reading and writing

He was still in the middle of life
He did the work, his wife the rest
He was kept informed by his mates
Never a burden to others out of pride

The void is deep after her passing
He holds his head in his hands
He wants to attend her funeral
But sits staring at the paper

Candle Song
You can't tell by the way they walk
You can't tell by their clothes
They won't start talking about it themselves
The shame can go very far
You can always break habits
And even if they are hard to see
Offer a hand if you suspect something
Such a hand is often a new beginning

Her big mouth, that was her weapon
She fought her way through her school days
Although she had just crossed the ditch
She didn't really know what she was leaving behind

Only when she realised that her life
Was more than just fun
She was happy that someone asked her
What she actually needed

(Repeat request for assistance)

Long to let kin heit en dochter
No read and write with each other

The song 'Winners' was created for the presentation of the culture prizes in Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel, on May 24, 2023, in Buitenpost and on May 30 in Burgum.

Winners

There is always one who is the best
One is stronger than the other
One can go further than their limits
We can go even further with each other

There is always one who is the first
One is faster than the other
One can go higher than their bar
We can go even higher with each other

There's a price for every finish line
And that's probably a good thing
Although today's price is different
It goes beyond that need
The finish line is never the goal here
And winning seemed unlikely
These winners think differently
These winners think differently
These winners think differently
They make others happy

There is always one who is the most beautiful
One is smarter than the other
One can go deeper than we think
We can go even deeper with each other

There is always one who is the most
One dares more than the other
Even if a prize is really worth something
If you do something for each other

There's a price for every finish line
And that's probably a good thing
Although today's price is different
It goes beyond that need
The finish line is never the goal here
And winning seemed unlikely
These winners think differently
These winners think differently
These winners think differently
They make others happy

The song 'Yn it sintsje' (In the Spotlight) was created for the ribbon ceremony in Achtkarspelen and Tytsjerksteradiel on April 26, 2023.

In the penny

They stand most hidden
Among grass or tree greenery
In the shelter of a tree wall
Somewhere in a quiet yard

Just higher than the mown field
Preferably not in full light
There they come to growth
There good is thought of others

They bloom in the winter
In the summer, in the autumn
They bloom in the spring
When they go before the rest
They continue to bloom through storms
Just like it has always been
They quickly gain color
When you put them in the light

Their harvest is famous
And is often distributed for free
As a kind of medicine
That feels very good very quickly

We have to pay attention to it
But for those who don't know the species
A ribbon might be useful
So everyone can see them

They stand most hidden
Among grass or tree greenery
But suddenly you see a ribbon
Then you know there is one
