Our climate is changing and the annual amount of precipitation is increasing. Especially the number of short and heavy showers is also increasing. These short heavy showers cause the sewer system to be heavily burdened. This is often the case in summer and especially in built-up areas. In this environment, the water cannot sink into the ground. As a result, the sewers fill up, water stays on the street and you may also experience nuisance in and around your home. For example, water coming up through the toilet or sink or your basement flooding. What can you do yourself to prevent flooding?

Tip 1: Ensure proper venting

Want to prevent your toilet and/or sink from bubbling and splashing during heavy showers? Then make sure your sewer pipes are better vented. This will ensure that the air created during these showers can escape better and, as a result, you will experience less or no nuisance.

Tip 2: Install a relief device on the downspout

Does the water ever overflow? Or are you afraid that this will happen in the future? You can prevent this by installing a so-called "relief device" on your downspout. This ensures that, when the excessive water can no longer be drained away by the sewer, it can run into the garden via this 'relief device' in the downspout.

Tip 3: Remove tiles from your garden

Fewer tiles in your yard allow rainwater to sink into the soil and replenish groundwater. This helps reduce street flooding during heavy rainfall. In addition, tiled gardens provide more heat in the summer. So removing the tiles also keeps your surroundings a lot cooler.

Should I also call the municipality in case of flooding?

We would like to ask you to wait until the rain subsides again or it becomes dry. Usually the inconvenience is over by then.

Relief Wells

Installation of a relief drain is required by the building code for new construction homes. Relief manholes can prevent a lot of inconvenience and damage during extreme precipitation and blockages. Many builders forget to install relief manholes. The cost of a relief drain is about €20. The damage in case of flooding is a multiple.

Aeration or venting home sewage system

A good house connection has venting and aeration. If this does not work properly, especially if the house sewer is poorly located, air can become trapped. These air bubbles cause less water to drain when it rains and can cause blockages.

Aeration of home sewers is necessary to prevent vacuum drawdown. Poor aeration creates negative pressure when flushing the toilet or draining the bathtub. The odor locks or siphons are pulled empty. This can cause sewer odor to enter the home.
