Biodiversity

A healthy and green living environment is important for people, animals and nature. This is why Tytsjerksteradiel is actively committed to strengthening biodiversity. Biodiversity stands for the variety of plants, animals and microorganisms in an area. The greater that variety, the stronger nature is and the better it can contribute to a healthy living environment.
Why is biodiversity important?
An environment with many different plants and animals is stronger and better able to withstand changes, such as drought or heavy rain. Biodiversity also affects our daily lives:
- Health: trees and plants purify the air and provide cooling in summer.
- Food: bees and other insects provide pollination for fruits and vegetables.
- Livability: a green environment invites walking, biking and playing. This is good for our well-being.
What does the congregation do?
The municipality is actively working to strengthen biodiversity. We do this by, among other things:
- Ecological green management:
- modified mowing management.
- grazing by sheep.
- introducing variation in vegetation.
- Creating branch rills in forest plantings where appropriate.
- Bee pact and bee policy plan to improve bees' habitat and increase their food supply.
- Greening schoolyards.
We also organize various actions for our residents, such as green lectures and the Tile Tosssy, part of the NK Tile Tipping.
What can you do yourself?
Every resident can contribute to more biodiversity. Small actions together make a big difference:
- Plant flowering flowers and native plants that attract bees and butterflies.
- Choose a green garden instead of tiles. This also helps against waterlogging.
- Hang a nesting box or make an insect hotel.
- Don't mow your grass too often to allow flowers to bloom.
- Put a rain barrel in the garden: good for the environment and for birds and insects.
- Leave leaves and twigs part way through fall; this provides food and shelter for hedgehogs and other animals.
- Avoid using chemical pesticides.
