In Tytsjerksteradiel, we practice ecological green management in suitable locations. Ecological green management focuses on the preservation and development of ecological values. This is achieved through, among other things:

  • Adapted mowing management
  • Grazing by sheep
  • Introducing variation in vegetation
  • Creating brushwood piles in woodland where appropriate

More information about adjustments to green space management can be found on our website.

When are the green areas mowed?

The municipality uses various management methods when it comes to mowing:

  • Extensive management (mowing and removal twice a year)
  • Grazing by sheep or regular mowing from April 1st to November 1st
  • Verge mowing takes place from mid-May to October 1st

Why is there no mowing around the trees?

  • This is, among other things, a cost-saving objective.
  • In addition, the municipality wants to prevent the brush cutter from damaging the base of the tree trunk.
  • It contributes to biodiversity:
    • By leaving the grass around the trees, we reduce the evaporation of water that the tree needs.
    • Longer grass ensures more water storage for the soil.
    • It is also more resistant to heat and drought, which is crucial in times of climate change.
    • And then there is also the ecological aspect: Less fuel is consumed by not mowing, and it offers more opportunities for small insects that are essential for our living environment.

The mowing is done carelessly. A lot of grass remains on the property, sidewalk or road
