In Tytsjerksteradiel, we engage in ecological green management at locations suitable for this purpose. Ecological green management aims to preserve and develop ecological values. This is done by, among other things:

  • Adapted mowing management
  • Grazing by sheep
  • Applying variation in vegetation.
  • Creating branch rills in forest plantings where appropriate

When will the green spaces be mowed?

The municipality has different management methods as far as mowing is concerned:

  • Extensive management (mowing and removal 2 times a year)
  • Grazing by sheep or regular mowing from April 1 to November 1
  • Roadside mowing is from mid-May to Oct. 1

Why isn't mowing around the trees?

  • This is, among other things, an austerity goal
  • In addition, the municipality wants to prevent the brush cutter from damaging the trunk base of the tree
  • It contributes to biodiversity:
    • By leaving the grass around the trees, we get less evaporation of water that the tree needs.
    • Longer grass provides more water storage for the soil.
    • It is also more resistant to heat and drought, crucial in times of climate change.
    • And then there is the ecological aspect: Not mowing consumes less fuel and provides more opportunities for small insects that are essential to our habitat.

There is sloppy mowing. A lot of grass is left on yard, sidewalk or the road
