Festive start to the 'Keep on cycling' season in Oentsjerk

The 'Doortrappen' (Keep Pedaling) season has officially started in Oentsjerk today. The text 'Safer Cycling' was sprayed on the street by Alderman Berber van Zandbergen. The 'Doortrappen' program aims to enable seniors to cycle safely until they are 100 years old. At the Giesberts physiotherapy practice, 18 seniors got on their bikes to complete a 26-kilometer tour. 'Continuing to cycle is not only fun, but also very sociable. This allows seniors to remain independent because they can manage on their own,' says Alderman Berber van Zandbergen.

Mini-course on mounting and dismounting (horses)

After the opening, a mini-course on getting on and off bicycles was given by the Fietsersbond (Cyclists' Union). Led by community sports coach Demi Phillips, the participants then completed a beautiful route through the region. Afterwards, they talked over coffee and snacks at Kafee it wapen fan Fryslân in Oentsjerk.

Keep on cycling

With 'Doortrappen' (Cycling Safely), the municipality wants to enable elderly people to cycle for as long and as safely as possible. It does this in collaboration with the Regional Traffic Safety Body of Friesland (ROF), the Fietsersbond (Cyclists' Union), VeiligheidNL, FrieslandBeweegt and SportFryslân.

The season opening of 'Doortrappen' (Keep Cycling) was also held this morning in the other 17 Frisian municipalities. Many cycling activities for the elderly are planned for the near future. For example, bicycle mirrors will be handed out, there will be test days for seniors who want to try a tricycle, and several cycling routes will be cycled.
