Mayor sought

The municipality is looking for a new mayor who is a good fit for Tytsjerksteradiel. Appointing a new mayor is a long-term process that requires great care. A trust committee has been formed that includes council members. This committee ensures that the various steps in the process are completed properly. On this page you can read what this process looks like and what steps are taken.

14 steps to appointing a new mayor

  1. Completed: Step 1: Confidential committee

A trust committee has been formed that includes members of the City Council. This committee does the preparatory work for the profile, conducts interviews and makes the final recommendation as to who is the best candidate.

On Feb. 27, 2025, the City Council decided on the establishment of the Commission on Confidentiality.

  2. Completed: Step 2: Profile.

The City Council draws up a profile for the new mayor. This is a kind of job description. It states what the mayor must be good at, what kind of person we are looking for and what task he or she will be given. But also, for example, about the style of leadership, communication and decision making.

Residents of the municipality could express their opinions about a new mayor between March 19 and 28 by completing a questionnaire online or by telephone. The questionnaire appeared March 19 (Frisian) and March 26 (Dutch) in weekly magazine Actief and was distributed through village halls and the town hall.

  3. Completed: Step 3: Commissioner of the King of Fryslân

During the public council meeting on May 20, the city council will discuss and adopt the profile with Arno Brok, Commissioner of the King (CdK) of Fryslân.

  4. Completed: Step 4: Vacancy

The Minister of the Interior opens the vacancy on the advice of the King's Commissioner.

  5. Completed: Step 5: Application period - May 27 to June 17

The vacancy will be open for 3 weeks and interested parties can send their applications to the King's Commissioner.

  6. Completed: Step 6: The candidates

The commissioner of the King selects appointable candidates. Among other things, he investigates whether a candidate has been in contact with the law.

  7. Completed: Step 7: Selection

The commissioner of the King consults with the commission on confidence about the selection of candidates he has made. The commission on confidence decides which candidates to invite for an interview.

The Minister of the Interior interviews the candidate and then nominates the candidate to the king for appointment. The king appoints the mayor by royal decree.

  13. Still to do: Step 13: Royal decree

Appointment of a mayor is done by royal decree. The king and a minister sign this decree. The decision is announced with a press release.

  14. Still to do: Step 14: Swearing-in and start of our new mayor

The commissioner of the King swears in the new mayor during a public meeting at City Hall.
