A smile at the right speed

Motorists driving on the Van Sminiaweg in Aldtsjerk will be greeted with a smile if they are driving at the correct speed. Mayor Jeroen Gebben installed a traffic smiley face sign there today. Experience has shown that traffic smileys (speed displays) encourage motorists to drive slower.

Improving road safety

"We as a municipality want to do everything we can to improve traffic safety in our villages," explains Mayor Gebben. "It's nice if a smile helps! Traffic safety is one of the priorities of the municipality's safety policy. "In discussions with our partners, traffic safety was mentioned as an urgent problem that needs to be addressed," Gebben adds.

Various locations

Dorpsbelang Garyp has also requested a traffic smiley, which will be placed on Westerein. The traffic smileys rotate throughout the municipality. They remain in the same location for 3 to 4 weeks, after which they are moved.

Electronic signs

Traffic smileys are electronic signs that measure and display the speed of vehicles. They warn motorists about their speed and encourage them to drive slower. The signs feature a smiley face that changes expression depending on the vehicle's speed. If the vehicle is speeding, the face turns sad, while the face becomes happy if the vehicle slows down.
