In the Netherlands, geocaching, which is searching for a treasure with a GPS using geographical coordinates, is a fast-growing and popular outdoor activity. The coordinates of the hiding place are published on the Geocache website: http://www.geocaching.com/

The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is happy to make geocaching possible, but wants to prevent nuisance and unsafe situations from arising in the public area, neighborhoods or nature. The municipality has therefore established a list of additional conditions.

What are the conditions for Geocaching?

The geocaching organization has established guidelines for placing and finding a cache. These guidelines can be found on the website of Geocaching Netherlands. In the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel, there is no obligation to report the placement of a cache. This means that you have permission to place a geocache if you meet the following additional conditions:

  • no damage or disruption is caused to nature or municipal property;
  • no lids may be lifted in the public space;
  • no paving may be removed from the public space, even if it is re-laid;
  • the location is accessible via established paths;
  • the efficiency and safety of the public road are not compromised;
  • no digging takes place in municipal land;
  • users of surrounding properties do not experience nuisance from geocaching;
  • the object has a maximum size of 3375 cm3, with the longest side not exceeding 15 cm;
  • the objects are not placed on structures, poles, brackets, stands, furniture, etc.;
  • the objects are not placed on, in and above the open water.

If placing a geocache does not meet the above conditions, it is not allowed.

The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel is not liable for removal or damage to the cache and reserves the right to remove the geocache if there is reason to do so.
