Impressive May 4th commemoration

It was an impressive commemoration on Sunday evening in Burgum. The silent procession, accompanied by members of the marching band 'de Marko's', led to the monument in the cemetery near the Kruiskerk. At the monument, wreaths and flowers were laid on the graves of military and civilian victims, while members of the National Reserve stood guard at the graves of five Allied airmen.

Acting Mayor Tineke Schokker-Strampel said during the commemoration: "It is almost enough to make you despair. All those places in the world where there is no peace." Her message in the face of this feeling of powerlessness was clear: improve the world and start with yourself. "It starts with how we treat the people around us. Let's stand up hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, for mutual freedom."

Afterwards, those present gathered in the Kruiskerk for a meeting with the theme '80 years of freedom and living in democracy'.

Many thanks to Drumband 'de Marko's', National Reserve, Rotary Club Burgum, Muziekvereniging Legato, students from Burgum primary schools and scouting 'De Twirre' for your contribution to this valuable commemoration.
