Radicalization and polarization

Everyone is allowed to express their opinions in the Netherlands. But sometimes differences of opinion can become so strong that it leads to tensions in society. In some cases, someone may even radicalize: a process in which a person starts thinking and acting in increasingly extreme ways, with the risk of violence or disruption of public order.

In Tytsjerksteradiel, too, we believe it is important to work together for connection and understanding - and to be alert to signs of polarization and radicalization.

What is polarization?

Polarization is the increase in contradictions between groups in society. Think of us-side thinking or the emergence of tensions around issues such as religion, politics, climate or origin. Often this does not lead directly to danger, but it can be a breeding ground for further escalation or exclusion.

What is radicalization?

Radicalization is the process by which a person becomes increasingly extreme in their thinking and sometimes willing to use violence for a particular ideal. This can include:

  • Political extremism (far left or far right)
  • Religious extremism
  • Anti-government thinking or conspiracy theories
