Disaster or crisis
Fortunately, the chance of a major disaster or crisis breaking out in your neighborhood is very small. If there is an immediate danger due to a disaster or emergency, you will be warned by the siren. If you have set up NL-Alert on your mobile, you will also receive a signal. Stay as calm as possible, go inside, close doors and windows and turn on the radio or TV to the regional channel.
The sirens are tested every first Monday of the month at 12:00 PM.
How does it work?
- Go inside the nearest building as quickly as possible.
- Close all doors and windows. Also switch off any ventilation systems.
- Let people who ring your doorbell take shelter.
- Warn people who do not notice the siren.
- Listen to the emergency broadcast station. This station will provide you with information and instructions from the government. In the event of a disaster in your area, this will be the regional broadcaster on radio or TV. In the event of a national disaster, this will be the Dutch channel 1 (Nederland 1) or Radio 1.
- Visit Fryslânveilig.nl. In the event of an emergency, you will find all information about the disaster here.
If you have to leave your house and surroundings
- Turn off gas, water and electricity.
- Only take the most essential items with you.
- Close your home and check if your neighbors know that an evacuation is taking place.
- In the event of a major fire, stay low to the ground and leave the building as quickly as possible. If this is not possible, stand in front of a window where the fire brigade can see you.
Transportation
- Bring as many other people as possible.
- Listen to traffic information on the radio.
- Follow the route indicated by the police.
- Go to the evacuation centre, or stay with family or friends outside the disaster area.
- Special transport is available for people in need, the elderly, and students during a disaster or crisis. The institutions (care or nursing homes and/or schools) where these people are at that moment will take care of this.
What should I not do when the siren sounds?
- If the siren sounds, never call the national emergency number 1-1-2. Also, do not call the local police, fire brigade, or ambulance service. The telephone exchanges could become overloaded, which would have serious consequences for the delivery of assistance.
- Do not pick up your children from school. Children who are at school must remain there and will be cared for by the school.
