School boards and the municipality see opportunities for a shared future for primary education in Trynwâlden
The municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel and the school boards of Stichting Oarsprong and Adenium have extensively discussed the future of primary education in the Trynwâlden. What is the best scenario for the children in the region? The joint conclusion is that the preference is to organize high-quality, sustainable (i.e., for a longer period) education and childcare for all children in the region on a larger scale.
Why is change necessary?
All primary school buildings in Trynwâlden need to be replaced or renovated. Partly due to the small number of students in some schools, this is very costly. Providing good education in smaller schools is becoming increasingly challenging. This is partly due to the shortage in the labor market. Attracting new professionals is difficult because they often prefer to work in larger schools. Small schools have fewer opportunities to collaborate with colleagues within the lower or upper grades. There is less expertise in the school, the workload is higher because fewer people have to do all the tasks, and arranging replacements is more difficult.
Promising scenario
The municipality and both school boards have carefully examined and discussed various scenarios for the future. A promising future scenario has emerged as a direction for consideration. This involves housing two schools (a Christian and a public school) for all children in the region in one building. In addition to education and childcare (for children aged 0-13), other facilities such as care, sports, and community organizations can also be accommodated here.
The advantages of scaling up
The quality of education improves when there is more expertise. This also creates more room for specialization and in-depth study. Scaling up creates classes with more children of the same age so that children can learn with and from each other and grow up together. Finally, it is financially sensible. Because, for example, housing and management can be organized more efficiently, more money remains to be spent on education and learning resources for the children.
Facing the future together
A common direction has been formulated. All parties realize that merging small schools is a major process. Obviously, this scenario is not realized overnight. It will take several more years before a new building can be put into use. In the coming period, the parties will further explore creating support, feasibility and planning. This will happen in close consultation with those involved.
