Tytsy Willemsma acting mayor of Ameland
Commissioner of the King Drs. A.A.M. Brok swore in Tytsy Willemsma as acting mayor of the municipality of Ameland today, Sept. 29, 2025, at the provincial government building in Leeuwarden. She temporarily succeeds Leo Pieter Stoel who has been mayor of the municipality of De Fryske Marren since September 22 last.
Ms. Willemsma will start immediately tomorrow and stay on until the appointment of a new Crown-appointed mayor of Ameland. That appointment will not take place until the end of next year at the earliest in connection with the municipal elections in mid-March. As soon as possible after the elections it will be seen when the vacancy will be opened.
The Commissioner of the King and the Committee on Confidential Matters of the Ameland Municipal Council agreed that an observer would be appointed until the arrival of a Crown-appointed mayor. The council was able to make wishes known to the commissioner that the observer should meet. The council will now work on a profile for a new Crown-appointed mayor. The search for a new mayor will begin after the council has adopted the profile. The observer, in consultation with the trust committee and Ms. Willemsma herself, will not be part of the procedure to arrive at a new Crown-appointed mayor.
Willemsma had been an alderman in the municipality of Tytsjerksteradiel since February 2019. Before that, she was an advisor to the North Netherlands Cooperation Association (SNN) at the House of Dutch Provinces in Brussels (2011-2019) and an alderwoman in the municipality of Dongeradeel (2006-2011). With Willemsma's appointment, there are 8 female mayors in Fryslân. This makes almost half of the Frisian mayoral corps women.
