Swimming in natural waters

There are 4 designated swimming locations in our municipality where you can swim safely and healthily:

• Swimplak Blauwhoek Jistrum
• Location: Little Switzerland
• It Wiid Earnewâld

On the zwemwater.nl app and website ( ), you can find up-to-date information about all official swimming locations in the Netherlands, safe swimming, and health risks.

Water Quality

In Fryslân, Wetterskip Fryslân monitors the quality of surface water by regularly collecting and analyzing water samples. You can check the current swimming water quality on the information signs at the swimming locations.

Do not swim near a sewer overflow

Sewage contains harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Direct contact with sewage or surfaces contaminated with sewage can lead to illness. Therefore, it is not advisable to swim near a sewer overflow site. This is especially true after heavy rain, as that is when sewage is most likely to enter surface waters.
